Under-16 Spring Tournament               Ipswich School, 16th May 2010

Twenty-two boys and ten girls enjoyed some hard competitive matches. It was good to see younger experienced players and also some newer players competing.

Both the boy’s singles and boy’s doubles produced some close group matches with two groups needing to be decided by points difference. The match of the boy’s singles was the closely fought semifinal between George Caplin & Tim Scott which showed very skilful and thoughtful play from both players, with Tim eventually winning in the third set.

The girl’s events were well supported again with both younger experienced players and some competing in their first tournament. The girls match of note was in the girl’s final when two very experienced team-mates and friends, Kym Gormer & Claudette Reis met. After three very hard fought sets Claudette eventually won 25-23 in the third. Both player should be congratulated on their fighting spirit and excellent play.

Suffolk Girls Win Medals at Badminton England Under-17 Suffolk Tournament

Ipswich, 27th February 2010

Once again Suffolk players struck gold and bronze in the Badminton England Under-17 Bronze Suffolk Tournament. In a highly competitive event with the largest entry numbers of any junior badminton event of this kind held in the county (48 boys and 32 girls in the singles events), the overall standard of play was good and many Suffolk players performed very well. However, pride of place went to Kymberly Gormer who, playing with Jennifer Bates (Lincs), took the gold medal in the girl’s doubles, an even more remarkable achievement as she is an under-15 player. Indeed it was another under-15 girl, Claudette Reis who battled through to the girl’s singles semi-final to also gain a bronze medal. Charlotte Clouting reached the quarter finals as well to make this a very successful tournament for the Suffolk girls. The boys also acquitted themselves well with everyone making their mark in their chosen events showing commitment and enthusiasm which was a credit to them all.

It is very encouraging that so many Suffolk players took the opportunity to participate and continue with tournament play in other events around the country. Suffolk should be rightly proud of a large number of junior players who have represented the county at all levels all the way up to England international level. Long may this continue.
