Inter-Counties Championship 2009-10

Suffolk Second v. Lincolnshire First

1st Nov 2009 (home)

This was the second match of the season for the county second badminton team. Playing against Lincolnshire’s First Team, they achieved a most creditable nine rubbers to six win.

Much of the credit for this win must go to the ladies of Suffolk who on the day were unbeaten. Laura Jacobs at No.1 singles had a sound 2-game win whilst Karen Adderson, having lost the first game, played deceptive cross-court and drop shots to win the next two games for a great win.

In the ladies doubles, Wendy Collins (new to county play) partnered by Laura Jacobs fought hard to beat the Lincolnshire first ladies pair in a 3-game tussle. They won quite comfortably against the second pair whilst Amanda Newcombe / Karen Adderson were just too good for their Lincolnshire opponents. This gave the ladies of Suffolk six wins.

The gentlemen of Suffolk did not fare quite so well. Matthew Clackett just had no answer to the Lincolnshire No.1 man. Daniel Hooper at No.2 just lost out 18 and 19: oh so close.

Matthew and Daniel combining in the men’s doubles had two fine wins whilst Daniel Moss / George Isherwood played well enough but lost both rubbers. It was very close against the second pair.

With the match won, there were three mixed to play and Suffolk needed two of the three to gain maximum league points. Again Matthew Clackett partnered by Wendy Collins was up against Harley Towler and partner. Harley was the most impressive player of the match: Matthew and Wendy lost. Daniel Hooper and Amanda Newcombe narrowly lost in the third game in their second mixed encounter. Daniel Moss and Karen Adderson played oh so well winning the first game, just losing the second game but coming home victorious 21-18 in the third game.

Well played again Suffolk Second Team

6th Dec 2009 (away)

The team was playing the return tie away in Lincoln, having won the first one 9 rubbers to 6 The Suffolk County Badminton Second Team oh-so-narrowly lost by just 8 rubbers to 7. The journey to Lincoln was long and four regular team member were unable to play. The reserve brought in certainly in no way let the team down.

In the singles, there was an excellent first county match win at senior level win by Hayley Moore, a very narrow defeat by Laura Jacobs,  a win by Daniel Hooper in two games and Daniel Moss was defeated in three games.

Good wins by Daniel Hooper and Daniel Moss in their men’s doubles encounters meant the rubbers were shared with Lincolnshire.

The same happened in the ladies doubles. Both Suffolk pairs, Amanda Newcombe / Wendy Collins and Laura Jacobs / Hayley Moore beat the Lincolnshire second pair.

The match stood at six rubbers each with the three mixed doubles to play. A spirited win by Daniel Moss / Laura Jacobs kept the Suffolk hope alive.. Unfortunately both the first and third pair lost so Lincolnshire ran out winners.

Note how close were some of the scores achieved by the reserves called in: Wendy Collins, Hayley Moore, Luke Hill and Richard Savory. Well played.
