Inter-Counties Championship 2009-10

Suffolk Second v. Leicestershire Fourth

25th Oct 2009 (away)

To the best of your reporter’s knowledge, three record firsts were achieved in this match:

1) George Isherwood was the youngest player to represent Suffolk in a senior county match;

2) Suffolk winning all four singles rubbers;

3) Suffolk winning all four men’s doubles;

Great!

As already stated, there were four memorable singles wins, all in two games. Of particular note was Laura Jacob’s good win at No.1 singles and the excellent win by Karen Adderson (nee Squirrel)  returning to county play, not to forget the sound wins by Matthew Clackett and Daniel Hooper.

Carrying on the good work, Matthew and Daniel paired up to win both their men’s doubles, whilst Daniel Moss played so soundly supporting and encouraging George Isherwood who was in no way overawed in senior company; they also won both their men’s doubles.

In the ladies doubles the ladies of  Leicesteshire fought hard, particularly their first pair who took both rubbers off the Suffolk ladies. Against the Leicestershire second pair, Amanda Newcombe / Karen Adderson narrowly won in three games with 22-20 in the third game, whilst Laura Jacobs / Charlie Aldred beat this pair in two games..

In the mixed, surprisingly Matthew Clackett / Charlie Aldred just lost out in a cliff-hanging three-game rubber: 21-19 the wrong way in the third game. Whilst there was a similar match score at second pairing Daniel Hooper / Amanda Newcombe this time losing 21-15 in the third game. To the rescue in the mixed, newly-selected Daniel Moss, ably supported by Karen Adderson, changed the mould winning 21-15 in the third game.

A well-deserved victory here. All the team supported each other both on and off the court. The long journey to Leicester was well rewarded with this 11 rubbers to 4 rubbers win.

17th Jan 2010 (home)

The second half of the badminton season started with a fine win by the county second team, beating Leicestershire fourth team by ten rubbers to five.

The Suffolk team were off to the best possible start with Daniel Hooper, Matthew Clackett and Charlie Aldred all taking their single encounters in two games. Particularly pleasing was the return to form of Charlie Aldred who beat a very experienced opponent.

In the men’s doubles, Suffolk continued in the winning way with Daniel Hooper / Matthew Clackett winning both their doubles with some very hard-hitting rallies. A good win was also achieved by Daniel Moss / Matthew Cavalcanti.

In the ladies’ doubles, the Leicestershire first pair proved too good on the day for the Suffolk pairings of Amanda Newcombe / Karren Adderson and Charlie Aldred / Laura Jacobs. Whereas against the second Leicestershire pair the Suffolk ladies were superior.

Going into the three mixed doubles, Suffolk had a winning 8 rubbers to 4 advantage. Matthew Clackett / Charlie Aldred oh so narrowly lost the first mixed. Daniel Hooper / Amanda Newcombe fought hard and scraped home in two games: 25-23 in the second. Daniel Moss / Karen Adderson also won in two games, winning the first game 24-22.

A great team win by 10 rubbers to 5, and what a good start to the second half of the season for the county badminton second team.
