Inter-Counties Championship 2009-10

Suffolk Second v.  Cambridgeshire Second

21st February 2010 (away)

In the county badminton team’s encounter, played in Cambridge when Suffolk Second Team played Cambridgeshire Second Team, it was a most keenly and exciting tie. No less than eight of the fifteen rubbers went to a third game, five of them going Suffolk’s way. This was the deciding factor in the tie which Suffolk won by nine rubbers to six.

The two Daniels, Hooper and Moss, both won their singles in two games whilst Freya Webb and Laura Jacobs had to work quite hard to eventually both win in a third game. Suffolk were four games up.

In the level doubles, whilst the ladies of Suffolk took three of their four rubbers, the men of Suffolk only managed just one. Encouraging play by the Freya Webb / Laura Jacobs pairing, a two-game win, whilst Karen Adderson / Amanda Newcombe had to fight very hard to have success.

The men of Suffolk fought hard and long as the score line shows but won just one men’s doubles.

Suffolk at this stage had a winning 8 - 4 lead with three mixed to play.  There was a good win and No.1 mixed by Daniel Hooper / Amanda Newcombe. It was a really fine mixed by Daniel Moss / Karen Adderson, narrowly losing in two close games, whilst Paul Adderson / Freya Webb also played well enough but unfortunately lost, so the final score ended 9 rubbers to Suffolk and 6 to Cambridgeshire.

What a good match which did credit to all the competitors. Well played Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

7th March 2010 (home)

The second team tie, to say the least, was a disappointing result with too many three-game rubbers gon to the opponents, Cambridgeshire. Eight rubbers went to a third game and only one of those going Suffolk’s way.

There were really great singles wins by Daniel Moss and Charlie Aldred, both in two games. It was great to see Charlie back to form. Likewise, two great ladies’ doubles wins by Laura Jacobs / Charlie Aldred and mixed doubles win by Daniel Hooper / Amanda Newcombe, again in two games.

The scores below show the disappointing results of the seven rubbers that got away. If just half of those had gone Suffolk’s way, it would have reversed the final score. Inspite of this result, Suffolk Second Team should finish second in their league and with only one tie still to play.
