Inter-Counties Championship 2009-10

Suffolk First  v. Jersey

13th Dec 2009 (home)

Suffolk County Badminton First Team played and lost by 6 rubbers to 9 against Jersey. All credit to the Jersey team who had left home at 7o’clock to play Suffolk at 12 noon, travelling by air to Gatwick and then car to Ipswich. Some journey.

The score line does not truly indicate the closeness of the tie with no less than five rubbers going to a third game and three of those rubbers going Jersey’s way.

Suffolk, with three regular first team players missing, started well enough, winning both men’s singles. James Scott, once settled, took the second and third game comfortably and Jonathan Isaacson was far superior than his opponent, particularly with his disguised lifts.

The Jersey ladies singles players on the day were just too good for the Suffolk ladies.

Janet Dennis / Jo Hughes had two good ladies doubles wins whilst reserve call-in Amanda Newcombe / Laura Jacobs played well to narrowly lose out.

Miguel Soler / James Scott managed the only success in the men’s doubles to a third game.

The score was 7-5 down with three mixed to play. Miguel Soler / Janet Dennis lost in two games, Jonathan Isaacson / Jo Hughes narrowly lost in the third game and James Scott / Amanda Newcombe had a comfortable two-game win.

So Jersey ran out 9 rubbers to 6 winners. Again the proof that a team is only as good as its reserves.

6th Mar 2010 (away - Hemel Hempstead)

It was a busy weekend for the two county badminton teams with the First Team playing away to Jersey, regrettably not in Jersey but in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, whilst on Sunday the Second Team entertained Cambridgeshire second team.

In the first team match against Jersey, it was a most excellent 10 rubbers to 5 win, and with this result a maximum three league points ensuring Suffolk finish second in the league.

In this tie, most satisfying wins by both men’s singles players. James Scott had to work hard to win in the third game whilst Jonathan Isaacson put on a master class of singles to win comfortably in two games.

In the ladies singles, Jo Hughes playing in the second singles, won in a tight third game. Janet Dennis put up a spirited fight against Jersey star player Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow. In fact Kerry won all four rubbers she played; not bad taking four of the five rubbers won by Jersey.

The Suffolk men won three of their four rubbers. David Wade / Alan Jone taking two and Jonathan Isaacson / James Scott one.

Suffolk ladies Janet Dennis / Alys Thompson and Susan Poole / Jo Hughes both beat the Jersey second ladies pair but lost the the first pair (that included Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow).

Suffolk had a winning 8 rubbers to 4 lead with three mixed doubles to play and needing two of them for 10 rubbers and so maximum three league points.

James Scott / Janet Dennis lost the first mixed (again Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow an opponent). Jonathan Isaacson / Jo Hughes had a good three-game win, whilst David Wade / Susan Poole  with good mixed play had a fine two-game win.

Well done the Suffolk First Team.
