County Squads - Veterans

A Festive Date for the Diary! Calling all Vets (that’s anyone over 40 or really close to it!) who want to shake off the excesses of the Festive Season – There is a Veterans Session being held at Ipswich YMCA, Norwich Road, Ipswich on Sunday 28 December from 11am until 2pm. If you are a member of the County Squads or just want to have a good workout mid-season, you will be very welcome. Over-45s v. Hampshire 12th October 2008 Over-45 veterans opened their account with a fine win over Hampshire 9-3. The 0ver-45 girls consisting of Sue Poole, Carol Cracknell, Kate Hooper and Janet Dennis, proved far too strong for their opponents, winning all four of their games. The men’s pairs both managed a win against the Hampshire 2nd Pairing and the team went on to win three out of the four remaining mixed games.

Over-50s v. Essex 19th October 2008 Whilst the first match of the Over 50’s season saw a 10 – 2 defeat for the Suffolk side, there were many encouraging signs for improved results later in the season. The closest of all was a Ladies Doubles match where Gill Harris and Sue Driver lost 29-30 in the third set of a marathon game which was very entertaining and nail biting!

Over-50s v. Buckinghamshire 2nd November 2008 Buckinghamshire Over-50s were not able to raise sufficient ladies to make up a team to play at Ipswich on 2nd November. This game may be re-arranged for later in the season, but with a heavy schedule, it is looking difficult to find a date.

Over-45s v. Middlesex 9th November 2008 Middlesex Over-45s have withdrawn their team this season after just one game – so our match on 9th November is cancelled.

Veterans’ Squads

The Veterans’ squads are always looking for additional players to join them – the only qualifying criteria is that you are old enough! You do not have to have represented Suffolk or any other county at junior or full county level to be eligible to play. There are several players in the squads who are enjoying the chance to represent the county for the first time.

We currently run Over-45s, Over-50s and Over-60s teams and are keen to restart the Over 40’s team if there is sufficient interest. Please contact Sue McKinley if you are keen to get involved. There are usually at least two Veterans’ Practice sessions held at the start of the season and again around the Christmas/New Year holiday break which are open to anyone over 40 – or about to be!

Yonex Inter-County League

Veterans Badminton is very active in Suffolk where we run Over-45s and Over-50s teams in the Yonex Inter-County League run by Badminton England link >>> .

The league teams consist of 4 men and 4 ladies playing level and mixed doubles in matches of 12 games, followed by a brief social in the form of a post-match buffet at venues across the South East of England.

Over-60s

Our Over-60s team play matches on a similar format on a friendly home and away basis with Norfolk and Lincolnshire. If any other counties are interested in arranging similar matches, please contact the County Veterans’ Co-ordinator, Sue McKinley email >>> .

Yehlex Inter-County Championships 2008/9

The championships are to be at various venues, all on 10th & 11th January 2009. Suffolk will have the following teams competing:

Over-45 Premier Division (Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield)

Over-50 Division 1A (National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes)

Over-55 Division 1A (Loughborough University)

Over-60 Division 1A (David English Sports Centre, Bournemouth)

We are keen to run an Over-40s squad and add an Over-55s team which already has a small nucleus of players. Once you have had your birthday, you are old enough to play in the respective age groups! The closing date for team entries is in May for the following season, so we are actively recruiting NOW!
