Schools News

King Edward VI Sports College in Bury St Edmunds has been awarded Badminton Academy status. George Wood of Badminton England has presented the college with £250 to support their badminton activities. The school has received £160,000 through the Community Club Development Programme for refurbishment of their sports dome.

A  funding bid made to ‘Awards for All’ by Suffolk Badminton Association has been successful.  A grant of £9518 will be used to improve coaching within schools and within the community.  It will also be used to help bring in more volunteers. Suffolk Badminton Association recognises the need to increase participation and improve quality of delivery from a young age to ensure the future of the sport. (More information on our Initiatives Page >>>)

Seven School Sport Partnerships in Suffolk have affiliated to Badminton England this season to take advantage of subsidised courses and other benefits. Young helpers from King Edward VI College enjoyed the opportunity of assisting behind the scenes at this year’s All England Championships! Such opportunities come with affiliation.

Westbourne Schools Sports Partnership hosted the first ‘Coaching for Teachers (Primary) Course’ at Whitton Sports Centre on 30th November.  It was very well received, with much positive feedback.

An award scheme is available for 11-21 year olds who "are prepared to go the extra mile and use their passion for sport to bring respect and understanding to their communities by setting up their own projects". The money is available for them to put their ideas into action. Details >>>

Badminton England Academy School Status  -   Change

The 25 Academy Schools will continue in their existing capacity but following feedback, Badminton England has decided to re-examine this area moving towards a Hub School within each School Sports Partnership (SSP) that will link with casual badminton activity and badminton clubs within the area forming a Community Badminton Network. These Hub Schools could be current Academy Schools. Where a Hub School is not already an Academy School they will be required to meet certain criteria (to be formalised in the next few months) that may well include the following:

1. Affiliate, either as an individual school, or encourage the SSP to affiliate;
2. Establish a school club link, to specifically include a coach with the capacity to coach within curriculum time;
3. Enter the National Inter-Schools Championships;
4. Badminton to be evident within all year groups.

More details to follow.
