Free Beginners Badminton Sessions Across Suffolk

Get Back Into . . . Badminton                     FREE  TASTER  SESSIONS

The Badminton Development Officer for Suffolk, Elaine Burrows, has been successful in obtaining funding from the County Sport Partnership for free taster coaching sessions across Suffolk. The taster sessions are followed by  courses suitable for people with little or no badminton experience. The funding of £8510 for the taster sessions and to subsidise the courses is a major boost to badminton in Suffolk.  It is hoped many of those taking part will decide to join clubs.

Suffolk Badminton nets £9,518 ‘Awards for All’ Lottery Grant

Suffolk Badminton Association’s objectives to grow the sport in the county have been boosted by the award of a substantial National Lottery grant.

Major initiatives will now take place over the coming year to increase participation, recruit more young volunteers and improve the quality of badminton in the county through a variety of training and coaching courses.

Tony Bristow, President of the Suffolk Badminton Association said, “We have three exciting project aims to develop badminton in Suffolk.   Firstly, we will give community coaches and teachers the tools and experience by which to encourage more young people to participate in badminton. Secondly, we aim to increase the number of qualified community coaches working within clubs and schools across Suffolk by offering subsidised coaching courses to teachers, club members or those wishing to start badminton groups in the more rural areas of Suffolk.  And finally, we will aim to increase the young volunteer workforce giving them the opportunity to learn new skills enabling them to officiate at tournaments and festivals.”

Steve Cox, Chairman of the Suffolk Badminton Association, expressed his delight with the award, saying “This supplements our programmes already in place to popularise badminton in Suffolk to wider sections of the community regardless of age or background.”

This gives Elaine Burrows, the Badminton England Development Officer for Suffolk who led the bid and who is still excited by the award, the opportunity to drive forward many projects she has been planning over the past year.   Elaine said, “This National Lottery Awards for All grant recognises the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how badminton allows young people to embrace a sport that can be played both socially and competitively throughout life leading to long term health benefits”.

In a letter to Steve Cox, John Gummer MP wrote “I was very pleased to learn that the Suffolk Badminton Association has been awarded a grant which will enable it to train teachers from local schools and the aim of which is to attract more young people to take part In the sport. I do congratulate all involved in submitting the application and wish the Association every success.”

Badminton Stand at Suffolk Show                                       28th and 29th May 2008

To promote badminton in Suffolk, there was a stand at which people were able to pick up leaflets and discuss taking up the sport.  Stowmarket and Meridians badminton clubs kindly helped with staffing the stand. It was very successful, with a large number visiting the stand.

Grants of up to £500 for Young People

Do you know anybody aged 11-16 who wants to make a difference in the area where they live?

UnLtd Sport Relief have grants of up to £500 to give to individuals or small groups who come up with an idea to bring people together through sport or recreation.

A possible example of a project to engage young people from different backgrounds is organising Beach Throwminton, using a giant shuttle anywhere outdoors.

Applicants will need to have a project advisor who assists them with the application process and supports them with their project; this could be a teacher, youth worker parent etc. UnLtd also provide support to successful applicants and offer opportunities such as training and networking events.

Attention is focused on trying to encourage 11-16 year olds to apply to the scheme as there has been a shortfall of applications in this age group. If you know anybody that you think fits this bill then please tell them about the awards. UnLtd Sport Relief are happy to provide pre-application support if wanted and are available to answer any questions that you may have.

For further information, please contact Abby Kegg, UnLtd Sport Relief,  telephone 0845 3670770, or  email >>>.

If you are thinking of applying, you may also wish to contact Elaine Burrows, Suffolk Badminton Development Officer, telephone 07725 413873, or email >>>.
