Suffolk was selected by Badminton England as one of three counties to lead the way in increasing the number of people playing badminton. The initiative is a partnership between Badminton England, Suffolk Sport, Suffolk Badminton Association, local leagues, community badminton networks and the Ipswich Badminton Performance Centre.

Since its launch, Suffolk Badminton Association (SBA) has been working on the Strategic Development Plan for the County with the aim of increasing participation at all levels and ages. Working in partnership with Badminton England, several projects are currently underway such as hubs providing 6 hours of badminton time in a single night for all ages and abilities (two so far at Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, two more in planning stage). The Community Badminton Suffolk Initiative is due for launch in October this year for 6-15 year olds, initially at six locations around the county, with support for female-only sessions, for juniors and for growing the number of junior clubs. The Strategic Plan is here.

Another key initiative is for the Suffolk Strategic Badminton Group to look at how communication about the sport can be improved.  Along with the SBA, it has started newsletters to individuals, clubs and leagues, a Twitter account and regular updates on the SBA website.  Forums are another part of this increased communications plan where those involved in the sport have an opportunity to have their say and get more involved in how the sport is shaped in its development.

There are clearly many challenges facing the delivery of a wider badminton experience for all and it is essential that all who offer the opportunity to play badminton can work together for the sport’s development. SBA has therefore arranged two forum meetings for clubs, to be facilitated by Suffolk Sport and would like to invite club representatives to attend for an open discussion regarding ways forward, the issues that are being faced and how the county association and Badminton England can potentially assist in club development and increased participation.  SBA representatives and the Relationship Manager from Badminton England will be in attendance.  The forums will be held at: -

Wednesday 19th September, 7pm to 9pm

Bury Leisure Centre, Beetons Way, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3TT.

Wednesday 26th September, 7pm to 9pm

University of Suffolk, Waterfront Building, Ipswich.

(postcode for car park opposite: IP3 8AH).

If you are a member of an affiliated club, please take the opportunity to get your views heard.  In order to ensure we cater for the right numbers could you please indicate by e-mail the meeting venue, numbers and club name who may attend please. I look forward to meeting you at one of the forums.
