YMCA Coe’s Mixed Handicap Tournament 2010

3rd April, Ipswich YMCA.

The 40th, yes 40th mixed doubles badminton tournament organised by the Ipswich YMCA Badminton Club took place on 3rd April. Following various sponsors in previous years, this year the event was again sponsored by Coe’s to whom warm appreciation is extended for their support. Thank you Coe’s.

Once again the tournament welcomed amongst the competitors the under-17 county team who will be competing in the the Inter-Counties Tournament at Nottingham University in a few days time: 40 counties trying to be the number one county team.

In the Coe’s sponsored tournament, which is a handicapped tournament, the handicapping team made a most excellent job of their task with most game’s play ending with only one or two points difference.

In the semi-finals, James Scott / Freya Webb playing off  minus 10, beat last year’s winners Miguel Soler / Susan Poole playing off minus 14, whilst Stephen Lambert / Eileen Wells playing off minus 2 beat Tommy Banham / Charlotte Clouting playing off minus 3. James/Freya and Tommy/Charlotte were part of the under-17 team going to Nottingham for the Inter-Counties Tournament.

The final produced a real cliff-hanger with James / Freya playing off minus 10 narrowly beating Stephen / Eileen playing off minus 2 by just one point, the score line being 21-20 in James and Freya’s favour.

The winners were presented with the winners’ trophy and Yonex rackets as prizes. Likewise, the runners-up also received Yonex rackets as prizes.

It was a great tournament with some really good badminton played by all the competitors and we look forward to next year’s even with interest.

Competitors were reminded that should their club not play during the summer months, or that they or any other badminton players would like to come along any Tuesday evening 7pm till late, the Ipswich YMCA is the place to get that summer badminton club type of play.
